Whether you have sand, silt, or clay soil, you can improve it over time to turn your place into a Garden of Eden! The simplest, fastest, and easiest way to achieve success is to purchase a quality bed mix to build a raised bed area for planting or to fill a large container or contained bed. Names like “veggie and herb mix”, “rose soil”, “landscape bed mix”, and “flower bed mix” are just a few examples.
Many people get it backwards. They buy plants and then come home and look for a place to put them. One of my mantras on GardenLine is, “Brown stuff before green stuff”! Prepare the soil first and then those plants you purchased with your hard-earned cash will thrive, rewarding you with beauty, bounty, and personal satisfaction.
Don’t plop a poor ol’ plant into an unprepared plot! Spend a dollar on your soil before you spend a dollar on your plants. You’ll save money in the long run and have a much better garden to show for it!
