Skip’s Homemade Weed Wiper

By Skip Richter, Hortculturist & Host of GardenLine Radio on KTRH 740

This homemade weed wiper is an effective tool for applying a post emergence herbicide to individual weeds without damaging nearby plants. It is made from a “grabber tool” with suction cups, used to grab objects that are out of reach.

It can be used to treat weeds in garden beds and lawns, or to apply a grass killer to grassy weeds that grow taller than the turfgrass. For a list of products to control various types of weeds see my publication, Herbicide Products for Various Types of Weeds.”

Parts List:

Grabber tool with suction cups

2 – kitchen sponges

2 – canning jar lids

2 – #6 bolts (1”), washers, & nuts

  • Cut sponges into circles that are about the diameter of the lids.

  • Make a hole in the center of the lids and sponges with a large nail.

  • Remove suction cups from tool.

  • Push #6 bolt with washer through sponge and lid.

  • Attach to tool through holes in metal straps with a #6 nut.

  • Wet sponges with herbicide. Avoid getting them too wet or the herbicide could drip out onto desirable plants.

  • Squeeze weed leaves between sponges to apply herbicide to most or all the weed’s leaves.
